Ekow Ewusi Loses Cape Coast North Seat Amid Allegations of Flight and Auction Fraud

Horace Ekow Ewusi, defeated in Cape Coast North’s parliamentary race, faces allegations of fraud involving fake auction licenses. With rumors of his escape abroad, calls for accountability grow louder as Ghana’s judiciary and incoming government probe the claims.

Horace Ekow Ewusi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Cape Coast North, has lost his bid to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament, Dr. Kwamena Mintah Nyarku of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His defeat comes amidst fresh allegations of fraudulent activities and rumors that he has fled Ghana to evade potential prosecution under the newly elected government.

Judicial Service Letter – RE: Petition of fraud against Mr. Horace Ekow Ewusie on fake auctioneers licences

Election Results and Implications

Dr. Nyarku secured a decisive victory in the constituency, leaving Mr. Ewusi to contend with questions about his political future. Many attribute his loss to both the strength of his opponent’s campaign and a series of controversies, including his alleged involvement in illegal mining and fraudulent practices as an auctioneer.

Judiciary’s Involvement

The situation took a dramatic turn when a circular from the Office of the Judicial Secretary, dated December 11, 2024, addressed allegations of fraud against Mr. Ewusi. The document, signed by Justice Cyra Pamela C. A. Koranteng (JA), detailed concerns about his alleged use of fake auctioneer licenses through two firms: Nyame Tumi So and Coastal Mart.

In the letter, the Honourable Lady Chief Justice directed:

  1. All courts and registrars to submit lists of auctions conducted by Mr. Ewusi to the Office of the Chief Justice by December 16, 2024.
  2. A suspension of all auctions by Nyame Tumi So and Coastal Mart, pending investigations.
  3. Referral of the matter to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for further action.

The circular reflects the seriousness of the allegations and underscores the judiciary’s commitment to transparency.

Rumors of Flight

Amid these developments, rumors have emerged that Mr. Ewusi has fled the country. Sources claim he departed shortly after his election loss, allegedly to evade investigation and prosecution.

This follows longstanding allegations against Mr. Ewusi, including accusations of misrepresenting his qualifications, involvement in auctioning seized excavators during his tenure with the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), and past criminal charges abroad.

Calls for Accountability

The incoming government faces mounting pressure to investigate Mr. Ewusi’s alleged misconduct. Civil society organizations and political commentators have urged authorities to follow through on the Judiciary’s referral and ensure that justice is served.

“This is not just about one man; it’s about restoring public confidence in our institutions. The judiciary has taken a firm stance, and the new government must do the same,” said a representative of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition.

Looking Ahead

With his political future in question, Mr. Ewusi’s legacy may be defined more by allegations of corruption than his efforts as an NPP stalwart. Meanwhile, Dr. Nyarku’s victory in Cape Coast North cements the NDC’s dominance in the constituency and renews hopes for continued development under his leadership.

As the dust settles on the 2024 elections, the public eagerly awaits the outcome of investigations into Mr. Ewusi’s activities, which could serve as a litmus test for the new government’s commitment to accountability.
