Breaking: President-Elect Mahama Mandates Nomination of Alban Bagbin as Speaker of 9th Parliament

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has nominated Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament, citing his extensive legislative experience and proven leadership. This move underscores the NDC’s commitment to strengthening parliamentary oversight under Bagbin’s stewardship.

In a significant announcement, President-elect John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary leadership to nominate The Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic. The decision follows consultations with the NDC’s National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership.

Bagbin’s Proven Track Record

Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, who served as Speaker of the 8th Parliament, has had an illustrious career in Ghana’s legislature. Representing Nadowli for decades, Bagbin has held key leadership roles, including:

  • Minority Leader
  • Majority Leader
  • Speaker of the 8th Parliament

President-elect Mahama highlighted Bagbin’s wealth of experience and exemplary service, stating that his leadership will be instrumental in guiding Parliament through this pivotal period in Ghana’s democracy.

Strengthening Parliamentary Oversight

The President-elect expressed confidence in Bagbin’s ability to foster an effective and efficient Parliament that prioritizes oversight and accountability.

“Under the stewardship of Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, Ghana’s Parliament will be further strengthened to deliver effectively on its oversight responsibility,” Mahama remarked in the statement.

A New Chapter for Ghana’s Legislature

As the NDC assumes a majority in Parliament following its decisive victory in the 2024 general elections, Bagbin’s renomination signifies the party’s commitment to continuity and experienced leadership. His leadership is expected to play a crucial role in navigating legislative processes and ensuring bipartisan cooperation.

The formal election and swearing-in of the Speaker of the 9th Parliament is scheduled for January 6, 2025, coinciding with the swearing-in of President-elect Mahama as Ghana’s next leader.
