Parliament Set to Dissolve as Ghana Prepares for Transition of Power

As Ghana’s Eighth Parliament dissolves today at midday, newly elected MPs will convene tonight for the swearing-in of the Speaker and the formation of the Ninth Parliament. Tomorrow, President-elect John Dramani Mahama will be inaugurated at Independence Square.

Ghana’s political landscape reaches a pivotal moment today, January 6, 2025, as the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic is set to stand dissolved at midday. This marks the transition to the Ninth Parliament and paves the way for the swearing-in of newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) and the President-elect, John Dramani Mahama.

The schedule for today’s proceedings and tomorrow’s presidential inauguration is as follows:


January 6, 2025

  1. Parliament Sits for the Final Time
    • The Eighth Parliament will hold its final session today. All MPs have been directed to attend in formal attire to mark the historic conclusion of this parliamentary cycle.
  2. Dissolution of Eighth Parliament
    • At midday, the Eighth Parliament will officially stand dissolved, as required by Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, signaling the end of its term.
  3. Seating of Newly Elected MPs
    • Newly elected MPs will convene at 10:00 PM in preparation for the formation of the Ninth Parliament.
  4. Election of Speaker of Parliament
    • The Clerk to Parliament will chair and supervise the election of a Speaker. This process is crucial, as the Speaker plays a central role in the parliamentary system, overseeing legislative proceedings and maintaining order.
  5. Swearing-in of the Speaker
    • At midnight, the Chief Justice will swear in the newly elected Speaker of Parliament.
  6. Swearing-in of MPs
    • Immediately after the Speaker’s swearing-in, the new MPs will take their oaths of office, officially commencing their terms as representatives in the Ninth Parliament.

January 7, 2025

  1. Presidential Inauguration
    • President-elect John Dramani Mahama will take the oath of office at a grand ceremony at Independence Square in Accra. The event is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM and will mark Mahama’s return to power for a second term, solidifying his role as Ghana’s ninth president under the Fourth Republic.
