President John Dramani Mahama departed for Bawku today, January 14, as part of his administration’s efforts to address the escalating conflict in the region. Ahead of his visit, he convened a meeting with the Heads of Security Agencies to discuss security arrangements and measures to ensure the visit promotes peace and stability.
Ensuring Safety and Promoting Dialogue
The meeting, held at the Jubilee House, focused on assessing the security situation in the conflict-prone area. President Mahama emphasised the importance of coordinated efforts to restore calm in Bawku, which has faced recurring communal violence. He tasked the security chiefs with ensuring his visit serves as a platform for promoting dialogue and reconciliation among the factions.
“Peace in Bawku is not just a local concern; it is critical to the nation’s development. My visit is to engage, listen, and work towards a resolution that restores harmony to this historic town,” the President stated.
Focus on Restoring Peace and Stability
During his visit, President Mahama is expected to meet with the Bawku Naba, local leaders, and key stakeholders to deliberate on pathways to resolve the conflict. 
The conflict, which reignited in October, stems from a chieftaincy dispute after the return of a rival chief from exile. The violence has claimed numerous lives, including women and children, and has disrupted daily life. Businesses remain closed, schools are shut, and many residents have been displaced, seeking refuge in neighboring communities.
Humanitarian and Security Challenges
Despite the enforcement of a dawn-to-dusk curfew, sporadic gunfire and attacks persist, exploiting gaps in security operations. Economic activities in the region have come to a standstill, exacerbating the humanitarian toll.
Security arrangements have been intensified ahead of the President’s visit to ensure safety for all involved and to minimize the risk of further violence.
