NAELP Denies Allegations, Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Development

NAELP denies allegations of corruption, citing its measurable successes in job creation, land restoration, and youth empowerment. Legal action is under consideration.

Accra, Ghana — The National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP) has categorically denied allegations made in a viral Facebook post by an individual identified as Nana Ama Osei Kufuor. The post accused the programme of being a politically motivated scheme under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, with claims of staff receiving salaries for non-existent work while campaigning for a political party during the 2024 elections.

In a strongly worded statement, NAELP rejected the accusations as false and malicious, asserting that the allegations were aimed at discrediting the programme’s credibility and undermining its contributions to Ghana’s socio-economic and environmental progress.

NAELP’s Achievements

Since its inception in October 2021 under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration, NAELP has focused on addressing the negative impacts of illegal mining by promoting sustainable livelihoods. The programme has reportedly achieved the following milestones:

  • Job Creation: Over 80,000 direct and indirect jobs have been created across various sectors, providing alternatives to illegal mining.
  • Land Reclamation: Approximately 1,000 hectares of degraded land have been restored, contributing to Ghana’s environmental sustainability.
  • Youth Empowerment: Nearly 2,000 young individuals have received entrepreneurship training through partnerships with institutions like Queens University. Many of these youth have transitioned from illegal mining to sustainable economic activities.
  • Collaborations: Partnerships with AngloGold Ashanti, GIZ, and other organisations have enhanced small business development by providing funding, equipment, and training.

Response to Allegations

NAELP dismissed the claims as baseless, emphasising the programme’s transparent operations under the leadership of Dr Louise Carol Serwaa Donkor. The organisation clarified that the list of employees shared in the defamatory post comprises legitimate staff members contributing to NAELP’s success.

The allegations regarding misuse of funds and partisanship were also denied. NAELP refuted claims of receiving substantial climate funds and challenged critics to provide evidence to substantiate their accusations.

Legal Action and Public Appeal

NAELP warned that it reserves the right to pursue legal action against individuals propagating defamatory content. The programme urged Ghanaians to disregard misleading information and focus on the verifiable achievements that underscore its commitment to sustainable development.

In its statement, NAELP reiterated its dedication to addressing the challenges of illegal mining, empowering local communities, and ensuring environmental restoration. The organisation called on well-meaning citizens and stakeholders to support its efforts in building a sustainable and prosperous future for Ghana.
