Parliament of Ghana Appointments Committee: Members Announced

The 9th Parliament of Ghana has unveiled its Appointments Committee, chaired by Hon. Bernard Ahiafor and with Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Ranking Member. This key committee will vet ministerial nominees to ensure competence and suitability, upholding Parliament’s constitutional mandate.

The 9th Parliament of Ghana has formally constituted its Appointments Committee, which plays a vital role in vetting and approving ministerial nominees proposed by the President. This key committee ensures that individuals nominated to ministerial positions are competent and suitable for their designated roles, as outlined in Article 103 of the Constitution and guided by the Standing Orders of Parliament.

On January 8, 2025, during the first sitting of the Ninth Parliament, the following members were named to the Appointments Committee:

Leadership

  • Chairman: Hon. Bernard Ahiafor
  • Vice Chairman: Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah

Majority Members

  • Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza
  • Hon. Mahama Ayariga
  • Hon. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey
  • Hon. Shaibu Mahama
  • Hon. Alhasan Umar

Minority Members

  • Ranking Member: Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin

Appointment Committee

Mandate of the Committee

The Appointments Committee is responsible for scrutinizing the qualifications, experience, and integrity of ministerial nominees. It recommends their approval or rejection to the House, either by consensus or through voting. This process ensures that the ministers tasked with leading Ghana’s governance structures meet the highest standards of competence and ethics.

The Committee’s composition reflects a balance of representation from both the Majority and Minority caucuses to foster impartiality and accountability.
