The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that calm has been restored in Ejura following a mob attack on the Ejura Police Station. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of January 11, 2025, stemmed from the death of a suspect who had been detained for an alleged case of theft.

Incident Details

  1. Suspect’s Arrest and Death:
    • The suspect was arrested at approximately 10:00 PM on January 10, 2025, for alleged theft and was held in custody.
    • At 2:20 AM, the suspect complained of illness and was taken to the Ejura Government Hospital for medical attention.
    • Tragically, the suspect passed away while receiving medical care early the next morning.
  2. Mob Action:
    • News of the suspect’s death incited unrest in the community.
    • A mob attacked the Ejura Police Station, setting it ablaze.
    • Some members of the mob forcibly retrieved the suspect’s body from the hospital.
  3. Response by Authorities:
    • The Police, in collaboration with community opinion leaders, engaged in de-escalation efforts to restore calm.
    • The Ghana National Fire Service was deployed to extinguish the fire at the Police Station.
    • Military reinforcements joined the Police to maintain order in the area.

Current Situation

The Police have confirmed that no casualties resulted from the unrest. Investigations into the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death and the subsequent mob attack, are ongoing.
