In a significant move aimed at addressing past electoral violence, President John Dramani Mahama has formally directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to initiate an immediate investigation into the deaths of eight Ghanaian citizens during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
The directive, issued via an official correspondence signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, emphasizes the importance of delivering justice to the victims and their families while safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
Key Directives to the Police
The President’s letter outlines several measures to ensure a thorough investigation, including:
- Formation of a Dedicated Taskforce: A special unit within the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is to be established to focus exclusively on these cases.
- Engagement with Witnesses and Families: Investigators are to conduct in-depth interviews with eyewitnesses, victims’ families, and other individuals who might have relevant information.
- Examination of Electoral Security Operations: The role of security personnel deployed at affected polling stations during the elections is to be scrutinized to identify any lapses or wrongful conduct.
- Forensic Analysis: Advanced forensic tools will be employed to analyze evidence from the crime scenes, including bullet casings and weaponry.
- Collaboration with Electoral and Civic Agencies: The CID is to partner with the Electoral Commission and other stakeholders to review reports from the elections for additional insights.
Public Assurance and Transparency
To foster trust in the investigation, the President has requested regular updates from the CID on the progress of their work. The government has also pledged full support to facilitate the process and ensure justice is delivered.
