President John Dramani Mahama has announced the deployment of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to major markets at night as part of efforts to curb the alarming spate of market fires across the country. This directive follows a meeting with traders at the Kantamanto Market, where he assured them of the government’s commitment to protecting their businesses and livelihoods.

“The recent series of market fires is deeply concerning, and we are taking decisive steps to address the situation. The Ghana National Fire Service will be deployed to major markets at night to ensure rapid response to any incidents,” President Mahama said.

Concerns About Possible Arson

President Mahama also revealed that arson could not be ruled out in the recent fires, which have devastated several markets and caused significant losses to traders. He emphasized the need for thorough investigations to determine the causes of these fires and bring any perpetrators to justice.

“Arson cannot be ruled out in these unfortunate incidents. I have directed the relevant security agencies to investigate the matter and tighten security around major markets,” he stated.

To prevent further incidents, the President has instructed security forces to enhance their presence in and around major markets. He also urged market authorities and traders to cooperate with security personnel to implement safety measures.

“We will work closely with market authorities and traders to improve safety protocols and reduce fire risks. Together, we can protect our markets and ensure the safety of your businesses,” President Mahama assured the Kantamanto traders.

Government’s Commitment to Supporting Traders

The President acknowledged the devastating impact of the fires on traders’ livelihoods and assured them of the government’s support in rebuilding affected markets.

“I understand the pain and losses many of you have suffered. The government is committed to assisting you in recovering from these incidents and ensuring that such tragedies do not recur,” he said.
